Overview

What to expect.

The Indian Ocean is a longer-stay cruising ground, away from the seasonal rhythm of the Mediterranean fleet. Two destinations carry it: the Maldives, a chain of atolls south-west of India, and the Seychelles, a granite-and-coral archipelago off East Africa. Their seasons interlock, which makes the wider region cruisable across most of the year.

The Maldives operates November through April. The atoll geography rewards seven-to-fourteen-night briefs: embarkation is from Male, usually with a seaplane transfer to the yacht at a sheltered anchorage, and the central atolls (the Baa, the Ari and the northern Raa) lie several hours apart. It is the most-requested winter destination for diving and snorkelling, with consistent visibility in protected lagoons.

The Seychelles runs April through October, filling the window the Maldives leaves. The inner islands (Mahe, Praslin and La Digue) are cruised year-round from Eden Island Marina; the outer islands (Aldabra, Cosmoledo and the Amirantes) require longer passages, more planning and a yacht with the range for them. A typical brief is seven to ten nights inner-only, or ten to fourteen nights inner-and-outer.

An Indian Ocean yacht charter is planned further ahead than a Mediterranean one, around the monsoon windows and the transfers, and run end to end by one advisor. Cross-ocean repositioning between the Maldives, the Seychelles and East Africa is arranged on owner request through the same operational team.

Frequently asked

Practical questions.

When is the best time for an Indian Ocean yacht charter?
It depends on the destination. The Maldives runs November through April, in its dry season; the Seychelles runs April through October. The two windows interlock, so the wider Indian Ocean is cruisable across most of the year.
How long should an Indian Ocean charter be?
Longer than a Mediterranean week. The atoll and island distances reward seven to fourteen nights: seven to ten for the Maldives or the Seychelles inner islands, ten to fourteen to reach the Seychelles outer atolls. Shorter briefs leave too little time for the passages.
How do you reach the yacht in the Maldives?
Embarkation is from Male, usually with a seaplane transfer to the yacht waiting at a sheltered anchorage. The transfer is arranged by the advisor as part of the brief.
How do you reach a Seychelles charter?
Through Mahe, with embarkation from Eden Island Marina for the inner islands. International connections run through the regional hubs, and the advisor arranges the transfer to the yacht.
What is there to do on an Indian Ocean charter?
Diving and snorkelling above all: the Maldives is the most-requested winter destination for both, with consistent visibility in protected lagoons, and the Seychelles adds granite islands and beaches to the water. Itineraries are built around the reefs, the weather and the guests.
What does an Indian Ocean yacht charter cost?
Indian Ocean charters are quoted to the yacht, the length of the brief and the atolls or islands on the route, rather than from a fixed list. Longer itineraries and outer-atoll range carry higher rates. The advisor sets out the full figure, including transfers, before anything is signed.
Can a charter combine the Maldives and the Seychelles?
On a longer brief, yes, but it is a repositioning passage rather than a short hop, and it follows the seasons: the Maldives in the northern winter, the Seychelles from April. Cross-ocean legs are arranged on owner request.
