Private yacht charter in the Maldives
The Maldives is a country made of water: twenty-six atolls and some 1,190 coral islands, spread over about 870 km of the Indian Ocean. A resort shows one island at a time. A yacht charter in the Maldives shows the atolls themselves, moving between house reefs, channels and empty sandbanks, with the freedom to follow the weather and the marine life.
Often the marine life sets the route: the whale sharks of South Ari, seen all year, and the mantas of Baa in the south-west monsoon.
The atolls from the water
North and South Malé. The two atolls around the capital and the airport, where most charters begin and end. The surf breaks on the eastern rim of North Malé are best from March to May and September to November. Mantas visit Rasfari, in North Malé, from December to April, and the lagoon of Guraidhoo, in South Malé, from May to November.
Ari. To the west, about 30 minutes by seaplane. Since 2009, a stretch of South Ari's outer reef has been a marine protected area, with whale sharks throughout the year. Swimmers keep four metres away and never in front of the shark, by daylight only and without flash. Mantas visit the cleaning station at Rangali from December to April.
Baa. To the north-west, a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2011. From about May to November, the south-west monsoon carries plankton into Hanifaru Bay, and reef mantas gather to feed, sometimes more than a hundred at once. Visits are closely managed: snorkelling only, with a permit and a certified guide, at most 80 snorkellers and 45 minutes in the water, and no entry at night. July to September are the busiest months.
Vaavu. About 64 km south of Malé, the least populated atoll in the country. Miyaru Kandu, a channel protected since 1995, brings grey reef and whitetip sharks in the north-east monsoon, with eagle rays and the occasional hammerhead.
Resorts and local islands. Most resorts occupy an island of their own, and a call for dinner or the spa is arranged in advance. Inhabited islands show everyday Maldivian life. Islam is the state religion, so modest dress is the courteous choice ashore, and alcohol, served on resort islands, may not be taken onto inhabited ones.
A week from Malé
A first week usually stays central: the reefs of North Malé, a crossing of a few hours west to Ari, two or three days in South Ari for the whale sharks, then back east through South Malé. Ten days or more leave time for Baa in the manta season, or for Vaavu.
When to go
The main season runs from December to April. The north-east monsoon is steadiest from January to March, with December and April as transition months, and brings the driest weather, the most sunshine and the calmest seas. From mid-May to November, the south-west monsoon brings more wind, rain and swell, though showers are usually short. It is also the season of Hanifaru Bay, and of quieter waters. Christmas and New Year are the most requested weeks, and the yachts for them are committed many months ahead.
Marinas and arrival
Velana International Airport sits on Hulhulé Island, beside Malé, with a passenger terminal opened in July 2025 and a seaplane terminal of its own. Direct flights arrive from Europe, the Gulf and Asia, but none from the United States.
Most charters embark close to the airport, with the yacht at anchor nearby and a tender for the transfer. The marina at CROSSROADS, in South Malé Atoll, about 15 minutes away, takes yachts from 10 to 70 metres. To start in a distant atoll, domestic flights reach Dharavandhoo in Baa and Maamigili in South Ari, and seaplanes serve resorts across the country. Every foreign yacht clears in through a local agent and cruises under a permit.
Yachts and what a week costs
Liveaboard vessels from the local fleet suit weeks built around diving. Private motor and sailing yachts, including superyachts that come for the winter season, suit groups who want more space and resort stays along the way.
A week is quoted as a base rate, plus the Advance Provisioning Allowance for fuel, food, diving and park fees, and a gratuity at your discretion. On a tourist vessel, Maldivian taxes are added: the tourism goods and services tax, 17 percent since July 2025, and a green tax of USD 12 per guest per day. The taxes that apply to the chosen yacht are set out before anything is signed. Our guide to what a yacht charter costs sets out the benchmarks, and the charter toolkit explains the APA and gratuities.
How a Maldives charter is arranged
We shortlist the yachts that suit your group and the season, confirm through the local agent that each is cleared to cruise and to take guests in Maldivian waters, and arrange the permits and any resort stay before you arrive. Dubai, where Balthazar is based, is a direct flight away, and the Maldives pairs with the Seychelles and the rest of the Indian Ocean.
Tell us your dates, the size of your group and what you would like to see underwater and above it, and we will come back with a shortlist. Start the conversation.
