Private yacht charter in Naples
Naples sits at the head of a bay with islands at its mouth: Capri and the Sorrento peninsula to the south, Ischia and Procida to the west, and Vesuvius behind the city. A Naples yacht charter starts close to an international airport, from marinas that take yachts of 100 metres and more, and the first evening can be spent at anchor off an island.
From here the routes divide. West lie the islands of the gulf and, beyond them, the Pontine islands. South lie Capri and the Amalfi Coast, and further on the long coast of the Cilento and Calabria that leads to the Aeolian islands.
The Gulf of Naples from the water
Naples. Marina Molo Luise, in the city centre, takes yachts up to 100 metres. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, and the National Archaeological Museum, with its finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, are worth a day ashore before or after the week.
Ischia. The volcanic island at the northern end of the gulf, about 30 kilometres from Naples, known for its thermal springs. The Castello Aragonese stands on a rock joined to the island by a bridge, and the fishing village of Sant'Angelo lies at the southern tip.
Procida. A small island between Capo Miseno and Ischia, Italy's Capital of Culture in 2022 and the setting for Il Postino and The Talented Mr Ripley. With the islet of Vivara, Procida shares the Regno di Nettuno marine protected area with Ischia. Created in 2007, the reserve regulates anchoring by zone, and yachts over 24 metres are barred from its strictest zones.
Baia and the Phlegraean coast. West of the city, the Gulf of Pozzuoli holds the submerged park of Baia, protected since 2002, where the remains of Roman villas and of the port of Portus Iulius lie underwater.
Capri and the Sorrento peninsula. Capri is some 16 nautical miles south of the city, and Castellammare di Stabia, at the foot of the Sorrento peninsula, is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast.
The Pontine islands. North-west of Ischia: Ventotene about 20 nautical miles away, Ponza some 22 beyond it, and Palmarola off Ponza. They suit a longer week or a one-way route north.
South to the Aeolian islands
Stromboli lies about 130 nautical miles south of Naples, a long day at cruising speed or an overnight passage. Beyond Salerno, Capo Palinuro on the Cilento coast has many sea caves, including a blue grotto of its own, and the Baia degli Infreschi lies further along; then come Calabria and the islands. A one-way charter from Naples can end in the Aeolian islands or elsewhere in Sicily, usually with a delivery fee for the yacht's return, set out before anything is signed.
When to go
The season runs from May to October. June and September are quieter; July and August bring the most yachts, peaking around Ferragosto in mid-August. In summer a light morning breeze usually gives way to a stronger sea breeze in the afternoon.
May brings the Tre Golfi Sailing Week, with maxi yachts racing round Ponza and Li Galli. In 2027, Naples hosts the America's Cup: the Louis Vuitton Cup runs from 22 May to early July and the Match from 10 July, and berths across the gulf are being allocated through an official marina network for the event.
Marinas and arrival
Naples International Airport lies about 7 kilometres from the city centre, a short drive from Marina Molo Luise. At Castellammare di Stabia, about 30 minutes from the airport, Stabia Main Port berths yachts up to 180 metres alongside, and Marina di Stabia takes yachts up to 100 metres. The harbours of Ischia and Marina di Procida suit an island start.
Yachts and what a week costs
The bay's marinas take everything from 20-metre motor yachts to superyachts, and the protected areas around Ischia and Procida reward a yacht with a capable tender.
Weekly rates follow the Mediterranean pattern. Before running costs, a 20 to 30 metre motor yacht runs from around EUR 30,000 to EUR 80,000, a 30 to 45 metre yacht from around EUR 80,000 to EUR 250,000, and yachts above 50 metres from around EUR 250,000, quoted individually; sailing yachts usually sit below motor yachts of the same length. The APA, typically 25 to 35 percent of the base rate, VAT at a rate set by the country and cruising area, and a customary gratuity of 5 to 15 percent bring the all-in cost to roughly 130 to 150 percent of the base rate. Our guide to charter costs explains each line.
How a Naples charter is arranged
We shortlist the yachts that suit your group and route, arrange embarkation in the city or at Castellammare, and plan the islands around the protected-area rules. Naples combines naturally with Capri and the Amalfi Coast, and a route south can end in Sicily. Our Amalfi Coast and Capri guide covers the southern side of the bay, and the wider Italian coast offers more.
Tell us your dates, the size of your group and what you have in mind, and we will come back with a shortlist. Start the conversation.
